Rhyl welcomed Welshpool for the first game of the year at Tynewydd Field. All though Rhyl had won convincingly at Welshpool a repeat of that performance never looked to be on the cards for today. Welshpool took the lead with a converted try and this made Rhyl up the pace and were rewarded when Tom Williams crossed the line. With the conversion by Richie Williams the score was tied . And with both teams converting a penalty the score was 10-10 going into the break.
The second half was played from end to end with neither team looking as if they would score. Both missing penalties. It was into the last ten minutes when a play by Rhyl saw the ball played out wide to speedy winger Will Morris who touched down in the corner to give the Dragons the lead for the first time in the game. That was the only score of the second half and was enough for Rhyl to take the victory at 15-10. Rhyl now have a seven point lead at the top of the league with Mold having a game in hand and Wrexham two games. It is felt that the promotion place are between the three teams. Some interesting games to be held in the next few months.
Next week Rhyl travel to Shotton RFC and hope to keep claiming the victory in their pursuit of promotion.
