Rhyl started the 2017/2018 at the Waen for the final time before moving on to pastures new next season at Ty Newydd Field. Up against title contenders Shotton.
It was Shotton who got on the score sheet first after a Rhyl Scrum on their own 5m. Rhyl were pushed off the ball by the big Shotton pack leaving the number 8 to pick up and get under the posts for an easily converted try. Rhyl then settled into the game and started to build on their structure before an inception by the Impressive Dan Lynskey playing at 12 led to an easy run in under the sticks. Another error from Rhyl led to a loose ball and centre John Ketley kicking through and pouncing for another converted try. Rhyl got back into the game with a wonderfully worked try resulting in the ever consistent Greg Profit breaking the line before putting first team debutant "Thor" Wright in space to finish in the corner. Rhyl went into halftime trailing.
The second half got underway and as both teams settled into the game. Rhyl yet again gifted Shotton a further 7 points with another interception from Dan Lynskey on the halfway line. Rhyl rallied together and tried to get back into the game but unable to settle into pattern the Shotton team went on to increase their lead with a couple of tries, stamping their authority as title contenders in Division 2 North. The Game ended Rhyl RUFC 5 Shotton RUFC 45.
Lots of positives to be taken out of the result with impressive performances from Danny Pearson, George Cliff and Gregg Profit. Also it must be said congratulations to the youth players gaining their first team appearances and former Rhyl Players Dru Roberts and Richie Williams making their return.
Rhyl 2's ran out victorious in an emphatic 51 - 5 win away to Llandudno 2nds. Leaving the coaches with plenty of headaches over selection going into next weeks Derby against local rivals Abergele at Pentre Mawr park.
