Rhyl 38 Abergele 20
The Dragons faced off against local rivals Abergele for the second week in succession in the first round of the WRU Bowl. Having gained a hard fought win last week, Rhyls players knew that only a committed performance would see them into the next round. The game started in the same way as the previous encounter with the home team slow out of the blocks and it was no surprise when Gele took the lead with an early penalty followed by an unconverted try.
Rhyl were trying to settle into the game and a try scored and converted by Ian Marshall put the dragons within a point, however a further Gele Score extended the visitors lead. A mixture of ill discipline and some poor decisions stopped Rhyl from playing their usual expansive game however a great solo try from Richie Williams and one from Man of the Match Rhyl skipper Simon Johnston put them in the driving seat. A close range score from Callum Morris extended the lead before a further Gele try again put the home supporters nerves on edge. The dragons then began to find gaps in a tiring Gele defence and a second try for Johnson and one from winger Jack Hughes saw the Dragons into the next round.
Rhyls season continues with a trip to Welshpool in the league next Saturday.
A strong Rhyl Second team saw off visitors Bala with an excellent 32 points to 31 win.
