Rhyl and District RFC travelled down to Cardiff to take on the Cardiff University team in the national Bowl competition. Fielding a lively team that didn’t show any effect from the five hour journey, they took the lead with an interception try by scrum half Tom Jones, converted by Ben Syme. The lead didn’t last long as the Uni lads came straight back at the Rhyl defence scoring a converted try to level the scores. In an entertaining first half ending 7-7 things looked good for the remainder of the match. What ever was said to the Uni lads at half time by the coaches worked well as the managed to score two quick tries , one was converted to take a 19-7 lead. This seemed to dampen the spirits of the Rhyl team and with more infringements occurring and the sin binning oh Rhyl’s Greg Proffit led to the ball being given away too easily. Cardiff University scored two more try’s resulting in the final score of 34-7. The performance of the university team show their commitment to the game. Rhyl were beaten by a better and well drilled team and we wish them well in the next round. The game was played in the true spirit of the game by both sides with the referee praising both teams on social media. Next for Rhyl is an home game against a strong Wrexham team.
