Rhyl and District RFC played Welshpool RFC at the Waen with a strong wind blowing down the pitch. With the wind behind them Welshpool took advantage with a long ball from the kick off which caught out the Rhyl defence, and Welshpool scored the try. Welshpool’s strong pack took advantage of the many infringements resulting in a penalty which was converted to increase their lead to 8 points. Rhyl players finally woke up and with some good possession, winger Stu Fellcrook crossed for the try which Ben Syme converted. In a move that started on the right touchline and with some good handling, the ball was taken across the field with Cal Morris going over in the corner. Welshpool replied with their second try to lead 13-12. This would have been more if it hadn’t been for Stu Fellcrook excellent tackle taking the Welshpool player over the dead ball line before he had chance to touch the ball down.
The second half was again littered with errors. Dru Roberts of Rhyl was yellow carded so the coaches had to make changes to cover his position in the pack. After he came back on and after some good work by the Rhyl forwards, prop Dru Roberts made amends by crashing over for a try, converted by Ben Syme.
With the score at 19-13 to Rhyl Welshpool pushed for the points. But the defence held out. Welshpool missed a penalty kick and with Rhyl holding out to the end they were victorious in a scrappy game.
