The Dragons retained the local rugby bragging rights with a hard fought bonus point win at Tynewydd fields over a determined Abergele team. The home team started slowly and it was the visitors who took an early three point lead with a penalty after a period of pressure on the home line. Rhyl were finding it difficult to get into their usual high tempo game with poor discipline giving the visitors far too many easy yards, however the dragons pack gradually began to dominate with a solid set piece and after some powerful runs from James Fisher Cook and George Cliffe, wing Jack Hughes finished powerfully in the corner to give the Dragons a 5 points to 3 half time lead.
The home side began the second half in more controlled fashion and after the Dragons impressive wing pairing of Jack Hughes and Reeve Wright had crossed for further scores a comfortable win seemed to be on the cards, however to their credit Abergele came back strongly and after a line out on Rhyls 5 metre line were awarded a penalty try to bring the deficit below a converted try . A tense period followed for the big home crowd as Abergele looked for an unlikely win and the home team looked for the bonus point which eventually came with a try from second row Brad White who burst through the Gele defence after several good phases of play to seal the win .
Both side have to do it all again next Saturday at Tynewydd fields after being drawn together in the first round of the WRU Bowl competition, Kick of 2-30pm.
