Rhyl 6 Wrexham 12

Rhyl had to settle for a losing bonus point at Tynewydd field on Saturday after loosing their unbeaten league record against promotion rivals Wrexham in a hugely physical but entertaining game played on a heavy pitch which never encouraged the home sides usual efforts to play their trademark expansive rugby. Rhyls pack went head to head all game against a much heavier Wrexham eight , both defences were dominating and the game became a battle for territory. A Wrexham infringement allowed Rhyl Fly Half Richie Williams to kick the Dragons into an early lead, however a home penalty enabled Wrexham to gain a line out near the home line and the ball was driven over for a close range score to leave the visitors with a narrow 7 points to 3 half time lead.

The second half was another battle of attrition on an increasingly heavy surface, both teams deserving respect for some superb defence whilst still trying to play with ball in hand. The second half scoring mirrored the first with another Williams penalty and a further close range Wrexham score after a period of heroic Rhyl defence on their line. Despite Rhyl working their way back into the game and applying pressure on the Wrexham line , they were unable to score and a final clearance kick saw the visitors home

Whilst Rhyl head coach Jimmy Waring will have been disappointed with the result, he will have taken heart from a gutsy, disciplined performance from his team. Rhyls next scheduled league game is at home to Colwyn Bay on the 14th of December
