Rhyl U15's draw against Colwyn Bay

Colwyn Bay have improved massively over the last 12 months with this being the 2nd match against The Bay so far this season, Rhyl knew it would be a tough test and that's exactly what it was.  It wasn't helped that Colwyn Bay didn't have a competent front row so uncontested scrums were called which was a major power play of Rhyl's.

Colwyn Bay were fantastic in every department in the first half, first to every breakdown and fast ball to the backs saw them pick up an early lead of 0-12.  Rhyl responded through Full back George Jones who ran from half way evading 2 or 3 tackles to put down under the posts.  Strong running and support play from Captain Christian Hone saw him touch down through the centre to bring the scores within 2 points.
Colwyn Bay were once again back on track and had much of the ball for the remainder of the half contesting well in the lineouts putting pressure on Rhyl to turn over.  With Injuries playing a big part early on with Prop Chad Fisher going off with a broken hand and Scrum Half Kai Wilson off with a broken nose this didn't help Rhyl's cause as Rhyl struggled to gel.  The Bay ran from a lineout turnover to touch down in the opposite corner.  Rhyl again responded through George Jones before the break to bring the score to 15-17.
Rhyl wanted to respond to their poor first half and showed commitment at the restart but missed tackles and lazy play from Rhyl allowed Colwyn Bay's Full Back to take the ball from kick off and score from his own 22 meter line. A try from Rhyl rained in the score once again but this was followed by Rhyl being pushed back on their own try line with poor cover from their forwards allowing the visitors to walk a try over at blindside from a breakdown taking a 20-34 lead.
Scrum Half Kai Wilson returned to the pitch late on after being cleaned up from his broken nose and Rhyl smelt blood of their own chasing the game and responded with a try again through Jones at Full Back bringing the scores to 27-34 with 5 minutes remaining.  Rhyl finally started to play with imaginiation and pace through the hands and scored a try by tap and go at half way from Scrum Half Wilson who ran into Colwyn Bay's unretreated players forcing them back another 10.  Rhyl finally decided to keep the penalty in hand after failed lineouts for the majority of the day, 2 phases later and a dummy pass from No8 Christian Hone saw him cross the line 5 yards from touch to bring the score 32-34.
No10 Callum Gardner didnt have a great day kicking in very tricky conditions and was to be even tougher from outside the 22 and 5 meters in with everyone watching, he took his time, composed himself and with the last kick of the match produced a fantastic kick to rescue a draw for Rhyl.
Rhyl were under parr today with forward's fitness and positional play being a major concern, however Colwyn Bay were fantastic for 55 minutes and certainly deserved more than a draw.
Well Done for showing determination in the last 5 minutes lads.
