PRESS RELEASE

Rhyl Rugby Club is just 6 months away from moving from its traditional Rhuddlan base after the Chairman announced the sale of the ground. The move to Rhyl will signal the end of nearly 50 memorable years at the Waen, the scene of an historic SWALEC Cup run in the mid 1990s, the famous North Wales Pub 7s, and arguably one of the most picturesque rugby locations in North Wales.

The sale of the Clubhouse, three rugby pitches and car park to North Wales Construction Ltd was completed in mid-March, so the focus is now on completing the new Tynewydd Field community and sports facility ready for the 2018/2019 season. Rhyl Rugby Club will continue to play out their remaining fixtures at The Waen until the official end of the 2017-18 season on 19 May. Club Chairman Richard Greenwood OBE confirmed the sale and said it was the final piece in a complex jigsaw that would see Rhyl relocate to one of the most outstanding new sports facilities in the area.

He said, ““After many years of planning and preparation, Rhyl Rugby Club stands on the threshold of a magnificent new opportunity to create a Community Centre in the heart of Rhyl. Not only will this be a top quality sporting facility hosting a resurgent rugby club, but it will also be a focal point for a wide range of other sporting and social activities.””

The sale of the ground comes just a few months after Rhyl Rugby Sports and Social Club, on Vale Road, was purchased by the Wellspring Christian Centre in December. They conduct their weekly worship each Sunday, butRhyl Rugby’s Sports & Social Club remains fully open for business from Monday to Saturday until the new facility at Tynewydd Field opens its doors later on this year.

Mr Greenwood said, ““19 community groups currently use the building and all the people who currently use the facilities on Vale Road and at The Waen have expressed a wish to follow us to our new location. For this reason, our focus is now on driving the final stages of the construction of the new Tynewydd Field venue. “As well as being the new home of Rhyl Rugby Club, it will be a centre for youth sporting activities offering every local youngster an appropriate leisure, sports or recreational package.”

The new complex will act as a Community Centre for the surrounding areas and will continue to cater for all our existing community groups. In addition the facility will cater for a wide range of social functions, with two large function rooms and full bar and catering facilities.

The final senior game at the Waen takes place on Saturday, 12th May and there will be a great celebration party on the day for all ages, former players, supporters, sponsors, patrons and club members to bid a nostalgic farewell to 50 wonderful years’ of the Club’s history, plus a toast to the next exciting phase in the Club’s history at Tynewydd Field.
