Rhyl and District 23-22 Newtown RFC

Rhyl 23 Newtown 22

The Dragons welcomed the side just above them in the table to Tynewydd fields on Saturday and came away with the narrowest of victories after a physical and end to end game.  Rhyl started brightly, the visitors struggling to cope with the home sides pace and tempo and it was only a matter of time before centre Jason Blackmore went over for an unconverted try. A penalty from Richie Williams followed shortly afterwards but Rhyl were unable to convert several other good chances and Newtown's big pack gradually began to gain good field position leading to a converted try. The Dragons responded well and after several good phases of play the impressive Reeve Wright went over in the corner try to leave the half time score at 13 points to 7 for the home team.

The second period followed in much the same pattern as the first with Rhyls mobile pack, led by man of the match Tom Williams trying to provide quick ball for the home teams impressive backline to use and Newtown using a big set of forwards and dominant scrum to gain field position.  An unconverted try got the visitors back within one point but two unconverted try's  from James Fisher-Jones and stand off Richie Williams and a further try from the visitors left the contest delicately balanced. Newtown dominated the final minutes but superb home defence kept them at bay until the final play of the match when the visitors went over in the corner. The large home support held its breath as the Newtown kicker sent the kick wide to give the dragons a well deserved bonus point win.

Rhyls next game is again at Tynewydd road against local rivals Colwyn Bay next Saturday, kick off 230pm.
