Rhyl 22-13 Welshpool

Rhyl and District RFC took on Welshpool RFC at Ruthin in the final of the North Wales Land Rover intermediate Plate. They very nearly rushed into the lead with in 20 seconds when receiving the ball from the KO, James Fisher – Jones ran through the advancing Welshpool pack running to 5metres from the try line before being stopped . It wasn’t long before Rhyl took the lead with a penalty conversion by capt Richie Williams. A reply of a penalty by Welshpool evened the scores but on 20 mins speedy winger , Reeve Wright made his way over the whitewash to touch down under the post. The reliable boot of Richie giving the conversion to lead 10-3. The rest of the half was strong defence from both teams which left the score at 10-3 at the break
The second half continued as the first with Rhyl putting pressure on the Welshpool defence and after several pick and charge plays by the Rhyl forwards , flanker Tom Williams crossed for the try duly converted by Richie Williams.
At 17-3 you would think that the game was over but 2 unconverted  tries with in two minutes brought Welshpool back into it at 17-13. Rhyl’s Fisher- Jones was sin binned for a no arm tackle but they held out for the ten minutes with out conceding.  With the game finely balanced with a result that could go either way,Rhyl pushed on to the try line and while playing advantage Reeve Wright crossed the whitewash only for it to be disallowed as the touch judge on the far side had seen an infringement. Rhyl kept on the pressure and when Reeve Wright ran at pace with only two props to beat it was no contest as he claimed his second try. It was the last play of the game and Rhyl were victorious at 22-13 in what was a hard fought game. Credit must go to both teams who provided us with an entertaining game in what could only be described as hot conditions.
This was the last game of the season for the young Rhyl team . They finished 5th in the second division in this the first season at Tynewydd Field. Playing all games in the first half of the season away as the grounds were not ready and this was only done with the support of all the other teams in allowing the switch in fixtures to which we are grateful. With the new facilities which have been described as fantastic by visiting teams and referees and the emergence of new young players , the future for the club looks very promising . The youth team have improved in stature over the year and some will become available for the senior squads once they have turned 18. With the u16s moving up to youth ,there is the possibility of fielding a youth team and an u17s team as well. Also there may be a women’s team with training going well on Monday evenings.
Still a few things to do during close season but the future is looking very positive for the club as a whole.
